So it begins…. The Owens House Build – Wanaka

 In Project News

Welcome to the first instalment of the ‘Owens House’ build. Each of our projects is personal, and we take pride in that, but this one is especially so given it is our own home. With the builder secured – but the timeframe a moving target – the next step was engaging an architect. We are thrilled with the decision we made to engage Rafe Maclean Architects for this project and launched into the design process in April 2017.

Fast forward a number of months and construction is underway. First stop, the foundations and concrete floor – one of those under-appreciated parts of a home build. Whilst the exterior gets all the glory, the foundations are not often celebrated.

What can be seen of the foundations is important to the Owens House build, as our design incorporates a cantilever at the front edge and along one side to create a shadow line. A product called Formply was used for the formwork as it creates a super smooth finish on the exposed foundation edge.

Whilst the concrete pour itself happens quickly, it’s what is hidden underneath that counts. The waffle slab construction uses reinforcing bars, polystyrene pods and mesh to create a robust platform to build upon.

Pouring the concrete slab is the first major milestone in the construction phase, we look forward to sharing our future build milestones with you.
